Hot Rolling Mills

During the Hot Rolling Mill process, heat and temperature distribution within the sheet play a large part in determining its final flatness. Also when the product is directly shipped to the customer following the hot rolling process, it is important that its final thickness is correct. Therefore, the key measurements required for this part of the process are thickness and flatness.

NDC’s unique ROMETER FQC and F300 Systems provide high-performance results that hot mill operators expect, especially where quality strip is manufactured for the automotive and white goods markets. NDC’s Total Distributed Intelligence (TDi) architecture creates a fully digital system that improves system speed, reduces system complexity and improves reliability. TDI also reduces installation and commissioning costs. Fewer components and interconnections make maintenance and troubleshooting very easy. The architecture has been proven on thousands of different NDC processes and applications since its introduction in 2006. 

Over 100 Rometers have been supplied worldwide making them the most widely used non-contact flatness measurement system in the industry. NDC’s Rometer continues that tradition by enhancing the system to more accurately and reliably measure metal flatness in extreme rolling mill conditions.

The Rometer flatness gauges are based on well-proven optical technology developed by NDC around the laser triangulation technique.  A one-piece optical bench supporting long-life laser diodes and new Smart CamerasTM create ultra-stable measurement performance that is required for consistent high precision in a mill environment.  Additional features such as automatic power and gain compensation, optical filtering and high speed image processing further enhance the performance regardless of changing strip reflectance and mill conditions.  The smaller, single sensor box is a rugged, compact industrial stainless steel housing sealed and cooled with a standard closed-water cooling circuit.  All systems also include an industrial blower to keep the narrow optical path clear.  All versions utilize a user-friendly, Windows® based interface and standard SQL® database for convenient data storage and analysis.

NDC’s AccuRay X-Ray Thickness Measurement systems are designed to operate accurately and reliably in hostile, wet environments, where vibration, pressure and heat persist. These Systems deliver measurement performance exceeding that required for the newest, most technologically advanced rolling mills built today. To ensure constant high performance regardless of mill or line type, each system is application-matched by optimizing the x-ray power and sensor components. All systems feature a metal-ceramic x-ray tube, over rated high-voltage power supply and a fully digital TDi-700 system architecture. This combination creates stable and repeatable measurement performance for extended mill rolling campaigns.

All x-ray sensors feature application-matched ion chambers. Developed through years of application experience these efficient detectors feature unique designs with 1ms. response times. To further reduce signal noise the detector output is converted to digital within the c-frame. 

The low noise and inherent stability of these systems allows permanent factory calibration covering the entire thickness range. This eliminates time consuming in-mill calibrations, x-ray power adjustments and the associated sample magazines. Automatic alloy calibration is standard in all systems. For higher precision, CPM (Complete Physical Model) provides coil-to-coil calibration based on actual composition.
